Curcuma caesia is a rare and endangered species of turmeric according to some Indian sources. This bluish/purple, sometimes light yellow, colored rhizome/root has a sweet camphor-like smell because of the essential oils present in this plant. The taste is earthy, bitter and hot, which is why this root is not really for culinary purposes.

Black turmeric, also known as Kali Haldi and Black Zedoary, has the highest concentrations of curcumin of any plant species.
